  • A three-time All-American during his illustrious career as a student-athlete.
  • Burns was a three-time All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honoree in cross country and a two-time champion in the 5,000m at the MCC Indoor Championships (1989, 1990).
  • Was key figure in Loyola's 4x800 relay team that finished sixth at the 1989 NCAA Championships.
  • Burns was a two-time All-American in the 4x800 relay and the two-time Central Collegiate mile champion also picked up All-America recognition in 1990 after taking third place in the 3,000m with a time of 7:58.90.
  • Once his competitive running days came to an end, Burns went on to coach the Loyola cross country/track and field teams for 10 seasons, and he guided the Rambler men to the program's only NCAA Cross Country Championships appearance, when it finished 31st in 2005.
  • While at the helm of the cross country programs, Burns' teams never finish lower than second place at the conference championships.
