Gordon Thomson served as the head coach for LUC's cross country and track and field programs from 1985 to 1999, compiling 10 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year awards during his tenure. Thomson guided the Ramblers to a total of seven first-place finishes at the MCC Cross Country Championships, with the men's team earning titles in 1986, 1987, 1995, 1996 and 1997, and the women's team capturing crowns in 1991 and 1995.

Thomson produced 15 All-Americans during his time at Loyola, including fellow Hall of Famers Jim Westphal and Eddie Slowikowski, who both competed in the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials. Outside of Loyola, he served as president of the United States Cross Country Coaches Association and was the men's development broad event chair for distances with USA Track & Field.
