Williamson scores 18 points to pace Ramblers

Boxscore

GREENVILLE, S.C. (November 8, 2019)

In Short
Lucas Williamson scored a team-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome a combined 46 points from Jordan Lyons (24) and Clay Mounce (22), as Loyola University Chicago (1-1) suffered an 87-63 loss to Furman (2-0) tonight at Timmons Arena. The Ramblers shot 52.7 (29-for-55) from the field, but turned the ball over 22 times.

How It Happened
Thanks to a 9-0 run that featured five points from Mounce, Furman turned an early two-point hole into a 16-9 lead. The Paladins would extend their advantage to 24-15 before a three-pointer from Williamson, layup from Cameron Krutwig, and buckets from Jalon Pipkins and Tate Hall comprised a 9-3 Ramblers spurt that trimmed the deficit to 27-24.

However, the Paladins countered that run with seven unanswered tallies of their own, capped by Mounce's third trey of the period, to stretch their lead to 34-24, their largest of the game to that point. Loyola shrunk the gap to 34-28 heading into halftime however thanks to a layup from Hall and another from Pipkins that just beat the first-half buzzer.

Loyola converted 59.1 percent (13-for-22) of its field goal attempts in the opening period, but was plagued by 13 turnovers.

Williamson's layup opened the second-period scoring and brought the Ramblers within four points, at 34-30, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the night. The Paladins then answered by tallying eight of the game's next 10 points to bump their lead back to double digits (42-32).

Minutes later, a bucket from Tom Welch cut the gap to 50-43 with 13:22 left to play, but Loyola was unable to capitalize on a handful of opportunities to cut into the deficit even further. Furman, which connected on 64.3 percent (18-for-28) of its shots in the second half, made the Ramblers pay by responding with nine unanswered points to extend their lead to 59-43 and never looked back.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Williamson was the lone Loyola player to score in double digits, hitting 3 of 6 tries from long range.
  • Pipkins produced nine points and five rebounds off the bench, while Krutwig contributed eight points, five assists, four boards and a pair of blocks.
  • Aher Uguak and Marquise Kennedy added eight points apiece for the Ramblers, who shot just 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from three-point land.
  • Nine of the 10 players to see action for Loyola scored at least one point.
