In Short
South Florida (3-2) closed the game on a 21-7 run to earn a 66-55 victory over Loyola University Chicago (3-3) this afternoon at John Gray Gymnasium in the opening round of play at the Cayman Islands Classic. The loss snaps the Ramblers' two-game win streak.
Â
Coach Moser's Thoughts
"We couldn't have asked for a better start and I was pleased with our energy and our defense, but we just did not handle adversity well."
Â
How It Happened
Behind three quick baskets from
Cameron Krutwig and another from
Paxson Wojcik, Loyola raced out to an 8-0 lead before South Florida was able to dent the scoreboard. Krutwig and
Marquise Kennedy did most of the damage early for the Ramblers, combining for 16 of Loyola's first 22 points as it built a 22-11 lead.
Â
The Bulls crept back into the game and closed within six points (33-27) at the half on Justin Brown's desperation heave from the left wing at the buzzer. Loyola was efficient on offense in the opening half, connecting on 62 percent (13-for-21) of its attempts, while USF, which committed 12 turnovers, stayed in the game thanks in large part to 55 percent (6-for-11) shooting from beyond the arc.
Â
USF rallied to tie the game at 45-45 midway through the second period, but a three from
Tate Hall with 10:28 remaining would put the Ramblers back on top, 48-45. However, that would be the last field goal Loyola would hit in the game, with the Ramblers notching their final seven points from the free throw stripe.
Â
David Collins followed Hall's three-pointer with a pair of free throws to open up a string of nine unanswered points that gave USF a 54-48 lead and the Bulls would never look back on the way to the win.
Â
A Look At The Numbers
- Krutwig led Loyola with 16 points, hitting 7 of 11 shots from the field. The junior center also notched the 1,000thpoint of his Loyola career early in the second half.
- Hall added 10 points for the Ramblers, while Kennedy chipped in nine points.
- Loyola shot 51.4 percent (18-for-35) from the field but committed 20 turnovers on the day.
- Collins scored a game-high 21 points for South Florida, which drained 10 of 21 shots from three-point territory.
