GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman (November 26, 2019)
Â
In Short
Colorado State (4-3) scored the final 10 points, including the game-winning basket by Isaiah Stevens with less than one second remaining, to hand Loyola University Chicago (3-4) a heartbreaking 61-60 loss in the consolation round at the Cayman Islands Classic this afternoon.
Â
How It Happened
A
Cameron Krutwig bucket with 9:03 remaining in the first half gave Loyola its largest lead of the period, at 23-17, but Colorado State responded with a 12-2 run capped by a Kendle Moore basket to move ahead, 29-25. The Ramblers closed the half with a flourish, scoring 12 of the final 17 points, four via Krutwig, with the final three coming on a three-pointer from
Lucas Williamson, to take a 37-34 lead into the break.
Â
Tate Hall, who scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, teamed with Krutwig at the outset of the final period to account for all 10 of the Ramblers' points in a half-opening 10-2 run that extended the Loyola advantage to 47-36. Minutes later, a layup from Hall increased the lead to 53-41, Loyola's largest of the afternoon, but the Ramblers were unable to administer the knockout punch.
Â
The Rams crept their way back within two (53-51), but Hall and
Tom Welch combined for all seven points in a 7-0 stretch that bumped the lead back up to 60-51 with 4:02 left to play.Â
Â
From there, Loyola was held scoreless down the stretch, but still had an opportunity to win the game after missing the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with eight seconds remaining. However, Stevens sliced his way to the basket, converting a jumper from close range with 0.9 seconds left to lift the Rams to the improbable, 61-60 win.
Â
A Look At The Numbers
- Hall enjoyed a terrific afternoon, totaling 22 points, five rebounds and five assists, while hitting a trio of three-pointers.
- Krutwig had another solid performance, collecting 14 points, eight boards and a pair of assists.
- Once again, the Ramblers connected on over 50 percent of their field goal tries, sinking 26 of 51 attempts (.510).
