CHICAGO (February 1, 2020)
Â
In Short
Cameron Krutwig scored a game-high 19 points and
Tate Hall added 14 points as Loyola University Chicago (15-8, 7-3 MVC) held Bradley (15-8, 6-4 MVC) 21 points below its season average to earn a 62-51 victory tonight in front of a sold-out Gentile Arena crowd. The win snaps a two-game skid for the Ramblers, who are now tied with Southern Illinois for second place, one game behind Northern Iowa, in the Missouri Valley Conference standings.
Â
Coach Moser's Thoughts
"I was proud of our defense. I didn't think we were great offensively, but we defended and rebounded."
Â
How It Happened
Hall and Krutwig provided the bulk of Loyola's scoring in the early going with Hall racking up five points in a 7-0 spurt that snapped a tie and moved Loyola ahead to stay, at 16-9. The Ramblers would run their lead to as many as eight points in the first half, that coming when
Lucas Williamson knocked down a three-pointer, for a 23-15 edge.
Â
Bradley hung tough and got within a point on a pair of occasions in the final 9:11 of the period, the last coming on Sean Houpt's three-pointer with five seconds remaining, to send the Braves into the break trailing by a single tally, 31-30.
Â
Krutwig scored five points during an 8-0 run to open the second half, which gave the Ramblers some breathing room and a 39-30 lead. Loyola's defense stiffened in the second period, and held Bradley scoreless until Darrell Brown buried a three with 13:42 left to play.
Â
After the Braves whittled the Ramblers' lead down to 43-39
Keith Clemons sparked a 13-3 run, starting things off with a layup, then punctuating the flurry with a three-pointer that pushed Loyola's advantage to 56-42, its largest of the game.
Â
Bradley clawed its way back and trimmed the Loyola lead to 58-51 with 2:00 left to play on a Nate Kennell trey, but the Ramblers knocked down all four of their attempts from the foul line down the stretch to win for the 23
rdtime in their last 25 MVC games at Gentile Arena.
Â
A Look At The Numbers
- Krutwig corralled seven rebounds and pitched in two assists and a pair of steals to go with his 19 points and Hall added three boards, three assists and two steals.
- Clemons finished with 10 points and Aher Uguak netted eight points, all from the foul line.
- Loyola limited Bradley to 38.1 percent shooting in the second half and held the Braves' Darrell Brown, who came in averaging 14.3 points per game, to eight points, and Nate Kennell, who averages 13.0 ppg, to five points.
- Brown, Houpt and Danya Kingsby tallied eight points apiece for Bradley.
