CHICAGO (December 7, 2019)
In Short
Behind the hot shooting of
Lucas Williamson, who scored a career-best 25 points, 24 of which came in the first half, Loyola University Chicago (6-4) rolled to a 90-59 victory over NCAA Division II foe Quincy (3-3) this afternoon at Gentile Arena for its third straight win. The Ramblers shot 61.8 percent (34-for-55) from the field for the game and appear to have broken out of an early season shooting slump, knocking down 10 of 18 tries from three-point range today.
Coach Moser's Thoughts
"We did a lot of good things today. I thought our first group set the tone with how they defended and executed and Lucas and (Cameron) Krutwig had it going."
How It Happened
Loyola stunned Quincy from the outset, getting a pair of threes from Williamson as part of a 12-0 game-opening burst. The Hawks got back within eight on a pair of occasions, the last coming on a three from Jonah Smith that sliced the Ramblers' lead to 22-14.
A three from
Keith Clemons ignited another string of 12 unanswered Loyola points, highlighted bv two more treys and a conventional three-point play from Williamson, to push the lead to 34-14. Williamson had a monster first period, surpassing his previous career high (23) by halftime, going 8-for-8 from the field and 7-for-7 from long distance, for 24 points.
As a team, Loyola went 8-for-11 from beyond the arc in the opening period and took a 46-25 advantage into the locker room at the half.
Krutwig opened the second-half scoring with a basket and
Tate Hall followed with a triple of his own to extend the Ramblers' edge to 51-25, their largest of the game to that point and they would not allow the Hawks to get closer than 20 points the remainder of the contest. Loyola's lead grew to as many as 36 (86-50).
A Look At The Numbers
- Williamson's 25 points came on 8 of 9 shooting from the field and he finished 7-for-8 from deep, while playing only 23 minutes. His previous career best was a 23-point performance versus Richmond last November at the Fort Myers Tip-Off. He fell one trey shy of matching the Loyola single-game record of eight set by four different players.
- Complementing Williamson's effort was Krutwig, who put up 18 points and eight boards in 21 minutes of play, hitting 9 of 11 shots from the field.
- Marquise Kennedy was the third Rambler to score in double digits, tallying 11 points, three assists and three steals off the bench, while Aher Uguak delivered six points, seven boards and a career-high six assists.
- Loyola has now won 24 of its last 28 home games versus nonconference opponents.
- Tanner Stuckman totaled 19 points and 12 rebounds to pace Quincy, which was limited to 37.5 percent (21-for-56) shooting from the field.
