Loyola’s Win Streak Halted by Davidson, 59-56

Kennedy nets team-high 13 points off the bench to lead the Ramblers

CHICAGO (December 22, 2019)

In Short
Jon Axel Gudmundsson knocked down a three-pointer with 2:10 remaining in regulation to give Davidson (6-5) the lead for good in a 59-56 victory that halted Loyola University Chicago's (8-5) win streak at five games this afternoon at Gentile Arena.

Coach Moser's Thoughts
"Give them credit, Davidson made more plays down the stretch than we did, and I'm disappointed that we didn't make enough of those. That is what The Valley is going to be like every single night. A grind-it-out game."

How It Happened
Both teams engaged in a defensive battle in the opening 20 minutes as each club connected on fewer than 40 percent of its field goal attempts and no one held a lead of more than five points.

Franklin Agunanne provided Loyola with a boost off the bench, scoring four points during a 7-2 spurt that broke a 17-17 tie and gave the Ramblers a 24-19 lead, their largest of the period. Davidson closed the half by scoring four of the final five points, including Hyunjung Lee's layup just before the buzzer, to get within 25-23 at the half.

Loyola turned up the defensive intensity at the outset of the second half, forcing three Wildcats turnovers in the opening three minutes, while going on an 11-2 run to take a 36-27 advantage. Tate Hall, who had a monster second half one week ago today, scoring all 21 of his points in the second period, tallied nine of the Ramblers' 11 points during that 11-2 stretch.

Davidson charged right back thanks to Lee's hot hand, using an 18-6 run that included 11 points from the freshman swingman, to reclaim the lead, at 45-42, with 8:07 remaining.

The game was a see-saw affair for the next six minutes with eight ties or lead changes until a Keith Clemons layup with 2:31 left to play knotted the proceedings at 54-54.

Following Gudmundsson's three on the ensuing possession that put the Wildcats ahead 57-54, Hall connected on a jumper to bring the Ramblers within a single point.

Loyola had a chance to retake the lead in the closing seconds, but Clemons' three from the right corner rimmed out and after Davidson drained a pair of free throws, Hall misfired on a triple from the wing to allow Davidson to escape with a 59-56 victory.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Marquise Kennedy came off the bench to produce a team-high 13 points, while adding four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals for Loyola.
  • Both Hall and Clemons added 11 points apiece, and Cameron Krutwig hauled in 11 boards, but was limited to eight points and just five field goal attempts on the day.
  • Lee led Davidson with 19 points off the bench, hitting 5 of 6 shots from three-point land.
