Post-Game Quotes
Detroit 83, Loyola 71
January 6, 2011
Loyola Head Coach Jim Whitesell
Opening Statement
"Detroit came out and beat us to the punch. They are a quick, athletic team, but we gave them too many second chance points, fast-break baskets. We didn't run our half-court offense well enough. They took us out of a lot of things we wanted to do. We had several opportunities in this game but didn't capitalize on them."
On Detroit's size
"They're excellent big kids. Eli Holman is the best rebounder in our league. He clears things up...He got one (foul) earlier, we just didn't get the ball back down there to get another one on him. (Nick) Minnerath I thought played very, very well. He shot the three well. He came into the game, I think, 3-for-13 from three. He has been a real nice addition to their program."
On the end of first half
"We didn't close the first half the way we wanted to. We got a stop, then we got a charge on (Courtney) Stanley. That was a big turnaround, then they go and score, so we're down five instead. At the beginning of the second half, (Geoff) McCammon hits a three, then they go one-three-one zone. We get within two right away, then all the sudden it's eight again. Then had to fight back again."
On the quality of play in the Horizon League
"Anyone can beat anyone. You have to have your `A' game on every game to win. I don't know if there is a team that can play off and win."
Loyola junior forward Walt Gibler
On Detroit's big men
"They are great big men. They have a lot of skill, so it's not someone you can just let up on, you have to play and fight every single possession because the possession you don't fight they are going to take advantage of it and score on you, or make something happen. So you always have to be aware of big men like that."
Loyola sophomore forward Ben Averkamp
On Detroit's size
"It's tough. Even if they put it on the rim, if you're not boxing out, they have got an opportunity to clean it up with a put back. Obviously, they're big, they're athletic."
