CHICAGO –
Alexa Kinas scored a team-leading 15 points for Loyola Chicago in a loss to Saint Joseph's on Senior Day, 63-50. The Ramblers had a five-point first quarter and couldn't make up the difference.
Loyola falls to 12-13 overall and 8-6 in A-10 play.
"Today was really disappointing, especially with the way we've been playing basketball as of late," said head coach
Allison Guth. "I was proud of our third and fourth quarter effort. Although we did force them to turn it over 21 times, we couldn't convert like we normally do. A positive thing is we have some more games ahead of us."
Kira Chivers added seven points and
Kendall Hendrix helped with four points and two blocks off the bench.
Loyola's defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 21 SJU turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor.
Alexus Mobley led the way individually for the Ramblers with two steals.
How It Happened
Loyola struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-5 at the end of the first quarter. SJU opened on an 8-0 run, while the Ramblers didn't tally their first field goal until 2:19 left in the first. Loyola was 1-10 from the field at that point.
The Ramblers continued to lose ground in the second quarter, going down 20 with 3:12 to play in the half. Despite a few late baskets from
Audrey Deptula and Kinas, the Ramblers and faced a 36-17 halftime deficit.
Loyola began to chip away at SJU, scoring 11 points by the 4:27 mark to get within 14. The Ramblers held the Hawks scoreless for over a five-minute stretch, but SJU still led after the third, 46-30.
The Ramblers couldn't make a dent in the Hawks' lead in the fourth. SJU was able to push it back to 20 with five unanswered points with 3:36 to play. Loyola scored eight of the next nine points, but SJU won, 63-50.
