Northwestern Shuts Out Loyola Chicago 2-0

CHICAGO -- In the 2025 season opener, Loyola Chicago fell 2-0 to Northwestern on Thursday, Aug. 14 at Loyola Soccer Park. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Allison Deardorff led Loyola Chicago with three saves while the Ramblers' offense registered nine shots in the loss, three on target.

Coach Quotes: Jon Sandoval
"The first half we gave them a little bit too much respect and too much space and time on the ball. Then when we got the ball, we were too indecisive in those moments. What you saw different in the second half was more of a sense of belief that that we could play with them. Once we're able to change that mindset, we will have some successful moments, but we still have to work on some things in the attacking third. I was relatively happy with the way that we responded in the second half."

"It takes time to get accustomed to a new environment, teammates, city, all kinds of different obstacles that come along with being in a new place, and the team has done a very good job at getting our new players acclimated, making them feel at home. When you have individuals that are taking that responsibility on in your own locker room, it makes that jump easier. As that has started to progress, you see those players become more confident and having more freedom with their play."

How it Happened

  • Northwestern had the pressure on in the first half, taking eight shots and forcing four corner kicks.
  • Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Allison Deardorff held off the Wildcats until they scored in the 41st minute (Stroebel G, Sigurjonsdottir A, Regazzoni A).
  • The Ramblers took only three shots in the first half, including one of two on-target attempts by junior midfielder Maggie Schmidt.
  • Loyola played much more assertively in the second half, tacking on three more shots than in the first and adding two more shots on goal (Schmidt SOG, Rossi SOG).
  • Deardorff stayed solid for another 45 minutes before Northwestern broke through to put the game away, 2-0, at nearly the 87th minute. (Roesch G, Fallon A).
