Box Score
In Short…
Freshman
Abby Swanson scored her second goal in as many games to help the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw in double overtime with visiting Florida Gulf Coast this afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park. Today's result sees the Ramblers wrap up non-conference play at 3-5-1, while the Eagles continue their unbeaten start to the season, moving to 6-0-2.
Coach Bimbi's Thoughts…
"I'm very proud of the performance of the girls. Our mentality was great from the opening whistle. We put them under pressure, caused some turnovers and generated some really good scoring opportunities."
How It Happened
Loyola came out as the aggressors on a warm late summer afternoon in Rogers Park. Junior
Sienna Cruz forced an early stop out of Florida Gulf Coast goalkeeper Melissa Weck in the ninth minute before fellow junior
Madison Laudeman hit the post on a free kick 15 minutes later.
Sophomore
Katharine Stephens entered with just over 30 minutes gone and quickly looked to make an impact, firing just wide of the far post in the 33
rd minute. Shortly after, sophomore
Jenna Ross nearly tucked a looping try under the crossbar, only for her attempt to hit the top netting to cap off a scoreless first half.
The Ramblers continued to pepper the Eagles' net in the second half, with Weck making saves on attempts by sophomore
Lindsey Hardiman and senior
Sarah Lawrence, respectively. Loyola broke through in the 61
st minute off a Laudeman corner, as Swanson headed home to give the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 edge. The visitors answered back just five minutes later when Holly Fritz unleashed a scorching blast that found its way in at the far post to even the score up at 1-1.
With regulation entering its final minutes, Loyola continued to push forward. Szczesny forced a sprawling stop out of Weck in the 86
th minute before the Eagles' netminder denied her again on a breakaway in the half's closing seconds to force overtime. In stark contrast to regulation, both sides struggled to generate chances in the two extra sessions. Loyola was forced to play at a disadvantage due to a second yellow card being shown to junior
Ari Banks in the 107
th minute of play but was able to hold on for a 1-1 draw.
Looking At The Numbers
- Swanson's goal, her fourth of the season, moves her into the team lead in the category. The sophomore is currently tied for third in the MVC in goals scored.
- Loyola unleashed a season-high 29 shots, compared to only 10 for Florida Gulf Coast. The 29 attempts are the most in a game for the Ramblers since Sept. 15, 2017 vs. Chicago State when Loyola registered 31 shots.
- Szczesny led the Maroon & Gold with 10 shots, one short of her single-game career high.
- Junior goalkeeper
Kate Moran stopped a pair of attempts.
