Ramblers’ eight-game home winning streak snapped

Boxscore (PDF)

CHICAGO (November 9, 2018)

In Short
Clay Mounce's dunk with 1.8 seconds remaining provided the difference as visiting Furman (2-0) overcame a 13-point, second-half deficit to earn a 60-58 victory over Loyola University Chicago (1-1) tonight at Gentile Arena. The loss snaps the Ramblers' eight-game home winning streak and is their first at Gentile Arena versus a nonconference foe since December 16, 2015, a span of 16 games.

Coach Moser's Thoughts
"Give credit to Furman. They made shots when they needed to down the stretch and didn't panic early in the second half."

How It Happened
Loyola hit just 1 of its first 10 shots from the field as Furman staked claim to a 14-3 lead in the opening eight minutes. The Paladins' lead would increase to 15, at 23-8, on a tip-in by Mounce with 7:08 remaining in the period, before Clayton Custer took over and almost single-handedly led Loyola to a remarkable comeback to close the half.

Custer's jumper with 6:40 remaining opened the floodgates of a string of 20 unanswered points, capped by a three from the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, that gave the Ramblers a 28-23 advantage. All told, Custer accounted for 16 of Loyola's points during that surge, but Furman would close the half by recording the final four points to trim the Ramblers' lead to 28-27 at the break.

Buckets by Cameron Krutwig bookended a half-opening 14-2 run that pushed Loyola's advantage to 42-29, its largest of the evening, with a shade over 13 minutes left to play. But, the Ramblers were unable to put away Furman, letting the Paladins slowly chip away at the deficit, with back-to-back threes from Jordan Lyons bringing the visitors back to life.

Another three from Lyons would tie the score at 51 before free throws from Custer and a pair from Aher Uguak put Loyola back on top, 54-51. Matt Rafferty put the Paladins ahead with five straight points before a pair of free throws from Marques Townes knotted the score once again. Two Rafferty free throws with 31 seconds left gave Furman the lead once again, but Custer's basket eight seconds later drew the Ramblers even for a final time before Mounce's game-winning dunk.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Custer finished with a game-high 19 points, while Lucas Williamson recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with two blocks and a pair of steals.
  • Townes finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals and Krutwig delivered nine points and seven boards, while staying perfect on the year from the field.
  • Loyola shot an uncharacteristic 37 percent from the field and 15 percent from beyond the arc.
  • Rafferty led Furman with 18 points and seven boards.
