CHICAGO (October 23, 2018)

In Short
An efficient Loyola University Chicago squad shot 53.8 percent from the field and turned the ball over just eight times, while limiting Winona State to 32.8 percent shooting, in an 82-52 victory in an exhibition contest tonight at Gentile Arena. Three Ramblers scored in double figures, led by Clayton Custer with 16 points.

Porter Moser's Thoughts
"You worry early about playing the right way, but I thought we played the right way tonight. I felt there was trust on the floor and we did a good job moving the ball."

How It Happened
The Ramblers shook off a slow start offensively and got three straight buckets from Cameron Krutwig to ignite a run of 13 unanswered points that gave Loyola control of the game. After misfiring on its first five field goal attempts, Loyola went on to knock down 16 of its next 27 tries (.593) in the first half. Winona State trimmed the deficit to single digits (20-11) midway through the period, but the Ramblers delivered a knockout punch by stringing together a 20-5 run, punctuated by a three-pointer from Marques Townes, for a 40-16 advantage.

All of the Warriors' offensive output in the first half was supplied by Kevion Taylor, who netted all 22 of his team's points in the opening period. Taylor would go on to hit a three-pointer early in the second half to open the scoring for Winona State before another Warrior got his name in the scorebook with Charlie Koontz hitting a jumper with 14:47 left to play.

Loyola put the game out of reach in the first five minutes of the second half, opening the period with 17 consecutive points, as Krutwig (6) and Custer (9) accounted for 15 points in that run that pushed the lead to 57-22, its largest advantage of the night.

A Look At The Numbers
  • Twelve of the 13 players who saw action for Loyola tonight scored at least one point, led by Custer's 16 points. The MVC Preseason Player of the Year hit 7-of-11 shots from the field and added three assists and three steals in 22 minutes of action.
  • Krutwig added 12 points and eight boards in 17 minutes and freshman Cooper Kaifes chipped in 12 points, on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, to round out the double-digit scorers.
  • Taylor led Winona State with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting. The rest of the Warriors connected on only 10-of-46 attempts (.217) from the field.
