In Short…
Goals from junior
Jenna Szczesny and senior
Emily Lange helped push Loyola past city rival DePaul by a final score of 2-0 this afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park. With the win, Loyola's fourth straight, the Ramblers move to 7-3-0 (1-0-0 MVC), while the Blue Demons slip to 4-5-0 (0-0-0 BIG EAST).
How It Happened
Loyola nearly went in front just 28 seconds into the first half as sophomore
Aleksa Tataryn saw her headed effort tipped away by DePaul goalkeeper Lauren Frasca. The Maroon & Gold continued to pressure the visitors from Lincoln Park and were rewarded in the 16
th minute when DePaul was whistled for a foul inside the 18-yard box. Szczesny stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted her attempt to the right of Frasca, giving the Ramblers a 1-0 lead.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Ford notched her first two saves of the afternoon shortly after Szczesny's tally, denying Franny Cerny and Madeline Frick, respectively. Szczesny made a bid for a second goal in the 22
nd minute, only to see her attempt parried away by Frasca. Ford would come up with two more stops before the halftime whistle, including a point-blank save on Lucy Edwards at her near post, as Loyola took a slim one-goal edge into the break.
As was the case to start the opening stanza, Tataryn again looked to spark the Rambler attack early on in the second half when she saw her attempt collected by Frasca in the 52
nd minute. Ford stood tall in the 67
th minute as she smothered a blast by Alexa Ben, the Blue Demons' second leading scorer, to preserve the lead.
With less than eight minutes to play, the trio of Lange and freshmen
Kat Stephens and
Jenna Ross provided the Ramblers with an insurance goal. Ross sent a cross into the box that Stephens chested over to Lange, who unleashed a volleyed effort to push the Loyola advantage to 2-0. Ford would record one final stop of Ben in the 85
th minute to seal a shutout victory.
Looking At The Numbers
- Szczesny tallied her seventh goal of the season during the first half. The Hoffman Estates, Ill. product currently leads both Loyola and the Missouri Valley Conference in the category.
- Ross was credited with her team and MVC-best seventh assist of the season on Lange's second-half tally. She is currently tied with Ashley Baron (2003) for fifth on Loyola's single-season assist record board.
- Ford notched her third shutout in as many games in goal, making six saves, and moved into a tie for fourth on the program's all-time shutouts record board, alongside Erica Pedini (1999-2002), by virtue of recording the 15
th clean sheet of her career.
- Loyola has now won four-straight games, marking the program's longest winning streak since the 2008 season.
- Today's victory was Loyola's first over DePaul since a 1-0 win back on Aug. 19, 2012.
