In Short…
The Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team picked up its second win of the weekend as it rolled past Iowa today, 3-0, at the UI Soccer Complex in Iowa City, Iowa. With the win, the Ramblers move up to 5-3-0 on the year, while the Hawkeyes now sit at 5-2-0.
Coach Bimbi's Thoughts…
"I'm so proud of this group of players and coaches. There's a belief in what we're doing and the players are performing at a high level right now. It was a great weekend to be a Rambler with the three conference points on Friday night and a big win today."
How It Happened
Both goalkeepers were called into action early on in the first half. Senior
Emily Lange forced a stop out of Claire Graves, the Iowa netminder, in the 16
th minute before senior goalkeeper
Maddie Ford turned away Katherine Woodruff just over a minute later.
Loyola jumped in front through the senior duo of
Katie Grall and
Avalon Senn-Raemont. Senn-Raemont was able to direct a pass from her senior counterpart past Graves in the 23
rd to put the Ramblers on top, 1-0. Grall was right back in the mix again in the 37
th minute when she connected with junior
Jenna Szczesny. Szczesny converted on her breakaway opportunity to send Loyola racing into the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Iowa wasted no time in looking to cut into the Rambler lead following halftime. Natalie Winters and Corey Burns both misfired, respectively, before Winters had an attempt hit the post in the 54
th minute. Ford came up with a key stop of Kaleigh Haus in the 73
rd minute to keep the shutout in tact for the Maroon & Gold.
The Ramblers removed any doubt about the final result in the 77
th minute. Junior
Taylor Lambouris sent a corner kick into the box that found sophomore
Madison Laudeman, who scored her first career goal to seal an impressive 3-0 road win for Loyola.
Looking At The Numbers
- Szczesny netted her team-high fifth goal of the year this afternoon as she matched her previous season-high output that was set during her freshman season.
- Grall added a pair of assists to bring her total in the category to three. She currently has a team-high 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists) to her name.
- Ford was impressive in goal today for the Ramblers as she notched four saves en route to her first shutout of the year and 13
th of her Loyola career. She's now tied with Lori Melching (1995-1998) for fifth on the program's all-time leaderboard in the category.
- Today's win was Loyola's first over a Big Ten Conference opponent since 2004. Coincidentally, that previous victory also came against the Hawkeyes.
Up Next
Loyola looks to carry over momentum to next weekend when it returns home to host city rivals Chicago State (Sept. 15) and DePaul (Sept. 17).
