Box Score (PDF)

In Short…

A goal in the 80th minute by Shaelyn McCarty proved to be the difference as Drexel downed the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team, 1-0, this evening as part of the Loyola Invitational at Loyola Soccer Park.  With the win, the Dragons improve to 2-1-0, while the Ramblers slip to 1-2-0.

How It Happened
Junior Madison Kimball notched the first shot of the game for either team in the fifth minute when she sent her attempt wide following a corner kick from fellow junior Taylor Lambouris.  Senior goalkeeper Maddie Ford came up with a pair of stops during the half's middle stages to keep the game knotted up at 0-0.

Loyola's best chance of the opening stanza came in the 42nd minute.  Sophomore Aleksa Tataryn raced towards goal and unleashed a screaming blast that soared over just over the crossbar.  Drexel's Melissa Lyon would send an attempt wide of goal two minutes later as the Ramblers and Dragons headed to the locker room all square.

The visitors from Philadelphia, Pa. looked to push the tempo coming out of halftime.  Ford notched back-to-back saves in the 59th minute before the Loyola defense cleared Madison Dunn's header off the line as part of a wild sequence.  Juniors Vivien Schultz and Jenna Szczesny both sent shots wide of target shortly after.  Kimball forced the first stop of the game out of Christiana Ogunsami, the Drexel goalkeeper, in the 72nd minute when she saw her long-range try collected.

McCarty came up with the game's deciding tally as she tracked down a deflected pass from Heidi Gspurning before rifling her shot past a diving Ford to put the Dragons in front, 1-0.  Sophomore Sienna Cruz nearly netted a late equalizer in the 88th minute but Ogunsami came up with one of the night's top saves to quell any hopes of a Rambler comeback.

Looking At The Numbers
- Drexel owned a slim 15-13 edge in shots but Loyola finished with an 11-8 lead in the category during the second half.
- Szczesny and freshman Lindsey Hardiman each tallied a team-high three shots.
- Ford led the Rambler defense with seven saves, her most in a game since an 11-stop effort against DePaul last season.
