In Short…
The Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back as it rolled to a 6-2 win over Oral Roberts this afternoon at the Case Soccer Complex in Tulsa, Okla. With the win, the Ramblers improve to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Golden Eagles drop to an identical record.
Coach Bimbi's Thoughts…
"I'm so proud of our mentality as a team today. We had attitude, concentration and great effort from everyone. It's a positive step forward for these girls as we prepare for another tough weekend at home."
How It Happened
Junior
Taylor Lambouris notched the first shot for either team in the fourth minute on a sweltering afternoon in Tulsa, forcing a stop out of Paige Vincent, the Oral Roberts goalkeeper. The hosts looked to strike first through the foot of Lexi Jones but senior netminder
Maddie Ford was up to the task in goal.
Loyola cashed in for all three of its first-half goals inside of a 15-minute span. Senior
Katie Grall opened the scoring in the 18
th minute as she slotted home at the far post from 15 yards out to make it 1-0. Just seven minutes later, junior
Jenna Szczesny doubled the Rambler lead, 2-0, as she worked her way down the left flank and inside the 18-yard box before calmly finishing. Szczesny would up the margin to 3-0 in the 32
nd minute as she headed into an open net following a pair of point-blank stops in rapid succession by Vincent.
The Ramblers wasted little time in looking to add to their lead at the start of the second half. Junior
Vivien Schultz found herself with space the top of the arc in the 49
th minute and unleashed a looping shot that went just over the bar. Grall would strike for her second goal of the afternoon shortly after when she sprinted in from the right side of the box and scored to up the Loyola advantage to 4-0.
Following a goal from Amogelang Motau in the 61
st minute that trimmed the Loyola lead to 4-1, the freshman duo of
Kat Stephens and
Jenna Ross quickly reestablished a four-goal edge for the Maroon & Gold. Ross sent a cross into the box that connected with a leaping Stephens to increase the lead to 5-1. Following a Golden Eagle foul inside the 18-yard box in the 77
th minute, junior
Madison Kimball added a sixth goal from the penalty spot. The Golden Eagles would convert on a penalty kick of their own in the 89
th minute when Jordan Langebartels converted but that would prove to be as close the hosts could get before time expired.
Looking At The Numbers
- Loyola's six goals scored today were its most in a game away from Loyola Soccer Park since a 6-1 win over Xavier back on Sept. 5, 2008.
- Both Grall and Szczesny notched the first multi-goal performances of their respective careers this afternoon.
- Ford finished the game with three saves as she picked up her first win of the 2017 season. Sophomore
Kate Moran entered in relief in the 67
th minute and stopped three shots in her collegiate debut.
