PORTLAND, Ore. - Devon Turk scored a season-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome some late-game heroics by UC Davis (3-2) as Loyola University Chicago (2-4) came up on the short end of a 64-61 decision in overtime today at the Portland State Tournament. Each of the Ramblers' four losses this year has come by six points or less.
Both clubs looked like they had played a game less than 24 hours ago as they struggled out of the gate. After missing its first six shots from the field, Loyola bounced back to hit four of its next six attempts and held a 12-7 lead with 10:42 remaining in the opening period. But a hoop by Josh Ritchart kicked off a 19-4 Aggies run that gave UC Davis a 26-16 lead, and for the first time this year, Loyola trailed at the break, 30-22.
Turk took over in the second half and nearly willed the Ramblers to a victory himself, scoring nine of his 17 total points in the second period. Corey Hawkins opened the second-half scoring with a basket to push the Aggies' lead back to 10, but then Loyola started to click on offense
A layup by Joe Crisman ignited a 23-8 Loyola run that featured nine points from Turk and gave the Ramblers a five-point cushion (45-40) with 4:19 remaining in regulation. Loyola appeared in control when Jeff White hit a pair of free throws to give Loyola a 51-47 advantage with 21 seconds left. But after Darius Graham hit a pair of foul shots to draw the Aggies within two, and White split a pair of charity tosses, Ryan Sypkens buried a three-pointer with one second left to send the game into overtime tied at 52.
In the overtime session, Hawkins' three-pointer broke a 56-56 tie, and after a jumper by Christian Thomas, Milton Doyle went coast-to-coast for a layup following a steal for his only field goal of the night to put Loyola on top, 60-59.
Sypkens came through with a clutch three-pointer again to rescue UC Davis, this time giving the Aggies a 62-60 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
Turk's 17-point effort is his best since totaling 17 at Youngstown State on February 7 of last season and by recording 14 points, Thomas has now scored in double figures in 22 straight outings. White also pitched in 11 points, and Doyle, though he was only 1-for-11 from the field, managed nine points, six boards, five assists, four blocks and a pair of steals.
Hawkins, the son of former NBA star Hersey Hawkins, led UC Davis with 17 points.
Loyola wraps up play at the Portland State Tournament tomorrow when it plays SIU Edwardsville at 11:30 a.m. Pacific.
