Youngstown, Ohio - Visiting Loyola never was able to find its rhythm, falling to Youngstown State 75-38 this afternoon at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio. The Ramblers slip to 6-12 (1-4 Horizon) on the year while the Penguins improve to 13-5 (3-2) with the win.
Loyola got off to a slow start, missing its first six field goal attempts while turning it over three times, as Youngstown State scored the first 12 points of the game. Troy Hambric finally got the Ramblers on the board at the 14:15 mark but the Penguins kept pushing, eventually opening a 22-2 lead on a steal and layup from Brandi Brown midway through the half. Consecutive hoops from Molly Crosby, Lyndsey Booker and Taylor Johnson helped Loyola slice into the deficit a bit but the home team was able to stay hot and take a commanding 42-19 lead into intermission.
Early baskets from Johnson and Abby Skube got LU off to a decent start in the second half but could never consistently find the range, shooting just 23% (7 for 30) after halftime as Youngstown State cruised to the victory.
Monica Albano's seven points were enough to lead Loyola with Johnson added six points and five rebounds. Brown led the Penguins with 24 points and 16 boards.
Loyola returns to action on Thursday night, closing out January with a 7 p.m. game at Milwaukee.
