MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Walt Gibler and Ben Averkamp combined for 25 points, but it wasn't enough as Loyola University Chicago (1-5, 0-1 Horizon) came up on the short end of a 59-41 decision to Milwaukee (6-1, 1-0 Horizon) tonight at U.S. Cellular Arena in the Horizon League opener for both clubs.

The teams played to a defensive struggle in the opening 20 minutes as neither squad shot better than 40 percent. Loyola held a three-point lead minutes into the game but Milwaukee scored seven straight points to take a 12-8 lead before the Ramblers tied the game at 14 on a three-point play by Gibler.

A basket by Kaylon Williams began a 6-0 Panther run that gave the hosts a 20-14 lead, their largest of the half.

Loyola found itself within three points two minutes into the second half when Chim Kadima drained a three-pointer form the wing, but Milwaukee countered with an 8-0 run that featured three pointers by Ryan Allen and Evan Richard to take a 33-22 lead and seize control of the contest.

Milwaukee dominated on the boards, out-rebounding Loyola, 42-20. The Panthers were led by Ryan Allen's 14 points. Walt Gibler tallied 13 points to lead Loyola, which also got 12 points from Ben Averkamp.

The Ramblers close out the weekend swing to Wisconsin when they travel to Green Bay on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest.
