MILWAUKEE - Geoff McCammon came off the bench to score 21 points to lead Loyola University Chicago (11-8, 2-6 Horizon), which shot 55 percent from the field, to a 71-65 victory over Milwaukee (9-10, 4-4 Horizon) this afternoon at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Ramblers overcame a 13-point first-half deficit and received 33 total points from the bench en route to the win.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the opening minutes of the game as neither club could find a rhythm on offense. A jumper by Anthony Hill eight minutes into the contest ignited a 17-7 Milwaukee run that gave the host Panthers a 31-18 lead, their largest of the day.
Loyola showed its resiliency by scoring nine unanswered points to claw its way back into the game and get within four points, at 31-27.
The Ramblers opened the second half on fire and quickly erased a 36-30 halftime deficit and turned that into a 46-40 lead with 12:57 left in the game. Andy Polka and Ben Averkamp combined for 12 points in that game-changing 16-4 run.
Milwaukee closed within a point on Tone Boyle's three-pointer, his first basket of the game, but McCammon's three-pointer stemmed the tide and gave Loyola momentum back. Clinging to a 57-54 lead with 7:25 remaining, Terrance Hill drained a three-pointer and Walt Gibler followed with a lay-up as the Ramblers extended their advantage to 62-54.
A little over two minutes later, another three from Boyle brought the Panthers within 64-62, but a lay-up by Hill and a pair of crucial free throws by Denzel Brito, sandwiched around a free throw by Milwaukee's Anthony Hill, gave the Ramblers complete control of the contest and a 68-63 lead.
McCammon connected on 8-of-11 shots from the field en route to his game-high 21 points, while Hill added 13 points, three rebounds and three assists for Loyola. Averkamp continued his solid play by contributing 12 points, six boards and three assists and Polka chipped in 10 points. Gibler added nine points and six rebounds to help the Ramblers snap a three-game losing streak and post their first win since Jan. 1.
Anthony Hill tallied 19 points to lead Milwaukee.
Loyola is back in action when it hosts UIC on Jan. 22.
