CHICAGO - Blake Schilb scored a season-high 32 points and Majak Kou added 19 to help Loyola University Chicago (14-9, 5-5 Horizon) snap a two-game losing streak with an 80-68 victory over Youngstown State (9-13, 4-6 Horizon) tonight at the Gentile Center. The Ramblers shot 53 percent from the field, including 63 percent in the first half, in a game they led from start to finish.
Loyola senior forward Brandon Woods, who was making his first start since Dec. 19, scored the first points of the contest as the Ramblers opened the game with a 7-2 run. Youngstown State stayed close and trailed 19-15 nine minutes into the contest before Kou's lay-up ignited a 25-9 Loyola run to close out the period. Kou and Schilb combined for 30 points in the opening half, hitting a collective 13 of 18 shots from the field as the Ramblers seized a 44-24 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Loyola built its lead to as many as 24 points, 63-39, but the Penguins closed the game on a 15-6 run to provide the final margin.
Schilb's 32 points tied for the second-highest total of his career and were his most since going for a career-best 39 points on March 4, 2005 against UIC in the quarterfinal round of the Horizon League Championship. The senior guard has topped the 20-point plateau in five of the Ramblers' last seven meetings with Youngstown State, and added seven boards, six assists and three steals to his totals for the evening.
Woods scored eight points and added four rebounds and four assists in his first start in six weeks, while Leon Young chipped in eight points and six boards off the bench.
Quin Humphrey scored a team-high 23 points for Youngstown State.
Loyola is back in action when it travels to Cleveland State, Feb. 1.
