Des Moines, Iowa - Drake's Sarah Foote scored her second goal of the match in the 95th minute to give Drake a 3-2 (OT) win over Loyola this evening in Des Moines, Iowa. For Loyola, which drops to 5-4-1 on the year, it marked their ninth one-goal decision of the season. Drake improves to 5-4-1 with the win.
"This was a tough match to lose," said head coach Frank Mateus. "We came out flat in the first half and got behind early but we played excellent in the second half and had plenty of opportunities to win the game in both regulation and in the overtime. Both teams played very well offensively and struggled a little bit defensively."
Drake jumped on lethargic Loyola early, as Foote setup Katie Sauer for the match's first goal in the 12th minute. The Bulldogs enjoyed a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes but settled for the 1-0 lead at halftime. The Ramblers came out an energized team in the second half, and pulled even just two minutes after the restart. Freshman Cynthia Morote-Ariza setup Katie Heidenreich who found the net for the second consecutive match to make it 1-1 after 48 minutes. Drake quickly responded and Foote knocked in a cross in the 53rd minute to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. Again, in a match with plenty of offense, Loyola battled back. Freshman Jackie Vera pounced on a loose ball and fired home her second goal of the season to tie the match, 2-2, on the hour. Loyola continued to push forward and Vera had another quality chance denied in the final five minutes, helping send the match to overtime. In the extra session, Foote latched on to a Melissa Nelson cross to send Loyola to its second overtime loss of the year (1-2-1).
Loyola comes home and gets right back to work on Sunday afternoon, opening Horizon League play against Wright State. Kick-off from Loyola Soccer Park is 1 p.m.
