CHICAGO - Junior Katie Heidenreich fired a rocket into the net in the 82nd minute as Loyola knocked off city foe DePaul, 1-0, this afternoon in a make-up game at Wish Field. The win was the second straight for the Ramblers and bumps their record to 5-3-1 on the year.
"After everything that happened on Sunday with the weather, I was happy we were able to come out today and get the win," said Mateus. "Even though we scored three times over the weekend, it was important to realize that we started with a clean slate today and we were able to finally get one late. DePaul was dangerous, especially on the counter, and to be able to persevere is a tribute to our team."
Today's match was a replay from Sunday, which was aborted after 49 minutes due to heavy rain and lightning with Loyola leading 3-0, and LU looked to make a similar statement this afternoon. However, the Ramblers did not exhibit the same touch in front of the net, although they didnt lack for chances. Arguably Loyola's best chance of the half came in the 21st minute when Julie Colhoff got her head to a corner kick but saw it ricochet off the post to safety. The offensive pressure continued throughout the match, with DePaul content to counterattack, and it finally paid dividends late when Mary Dale teed up Heidenreich for a 20-yard blast into the upper-left corner for the winner.
Loyola's pressure was illustrated in the stats, as the Ramblers owned a 20-8 edge in shots and a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior keeper Emily Peick, who set the school-record for career shutouts last Friday night, added another one to her total, making two saves, including one in the 89th minute to help seal the win.
The Ramblers return to action on Friday night when it battles Drake in its seventh road outing in 10 matches. Kick-off from Des Moines is set for 7 p.m.
