COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Blake Schilb's three-pointer with 59 seconds left helped lift Loyola University Chicago (2-1) to a 77-73 victory over IUPUI (1-2) this evening at the Black Coaches Association Classic at Value City Arena. With the win, Loyola claimed third place in the tournament.
"We started the game very well, then IUPUI answered back and we kind of lost our momentum," Loyola head coach Jim Whitesell said. "Give credit to Blake and Majak, they played like seniors tonight and weren't going to go down without a fight."
The Ramblers scored the first nine points of the game, but quickly saw that lead evaporate as the Jaguars buried six three-pointers in the first half and took a 41-35 lead at the half.
IUPUI led by as many as 11 points (66-55) in the second half before Loyola tightened up its defense and started to connect from long range. Majak Kou's triple with 2:53 left gave Loyola a 71-69 lead, its first since late in the first half. David Barlow hit a pair of foul shots to draw the Jaguars even before Schilb buried his trey with just under a minute left. Tracy Robinson added a free throw with four seconds left to seal the victory.
Kou scored a team-high 23 points, while J.R. Blount chipped in 15 and Schilb added 14 points, eight assists and five boards.
IUPUI was led by 25 points from Matt Burks.
Loyola plays its home opener, Nov. 17 versus John Carroll.
