LEESBURG, Fla. -- Loyola Chicago secured its first two wins of the season against Southern Miss and South Alabama on day one at THE Spring Games on Friday, Feb. 13.
The Ramblers defeated the Golden Eagles in walk-off fashion, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh and disrupting the late lead. Loyola then took down South Alabama 7-6 to finish the day.Â
Game One: Loyola 3, Southern Miss 2Â
After rookie Anna Kiel started the ballgame for the Ramblers and pitched five shutout innings against the Golden Eagles, only allowing five hits and striking out two, her freshman counterpart Katie Geydoshek got the win out of the bullpen for Loyola.Â
At the plate, the Ramblers were led by freshman Megan Piotrowski, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a triple and a walk. Graduate student Adelina Staden put together a strong performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Kiel also helped out for Loyola, recording one hit in one trip to the plate while adding an RBI.
The Ramblers were on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring late in the fifth inning. Kiel recorded an got an RBI to score Piotrowski from second base. Southern Miss then rallied to take a 2-1 lead at the top of the seventh before Staden had a two-run single in the bottom half to walk it off.Â
