CHICAGO -- Loyola Chicago played No. 10 Iowa to a scoreless draw on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Loyola Soccer Park. It marked the Ramblers' best result at home against a Top 20 team since 2019 when they tied then-No. 16 Wisconsin, 1-1, at Hoyne Field.
Loyola moved to 2-1-1 overall after the tie.
Coach Quotes: Jon Sandoval
"I don't think it was any different than the way that we've approached the matches so far in the season. We want to continue to progress and continue to play our best soccer when it means the most, and the only way you do that is to find strides in the matches before that. Any time you have a team like Iowa, who's well coached and have a great history there, Dave does a great job, we know that we don't have a choice. You have one choice, and it's you have to come to work and you have to do the job; you have to embrace your chip, and you have to play a full 90, and this is the first time we played a full 90 this season."
"In order to get a result against the No. 10 team in the country, you have to be really, really good. There were a couple moments where we were a little bit unorganized in the back, and they could have maybe found one if it wasn't for for Deardorff coming up big. We have to be more attentive to situation and certain moment. The other thing is we have to finish the week; it's a really good result that should provide us some confidence, but it's a tie, and we want to finish the weekend. This will mean a whole lot less if we don't show up and do our job on Sunday."
How it Happened
- It was a physical contest between the Ramblers and the Hawkeyes that featured 25 combined fouls and three yellow cards against Loyola; Loyola held strong defensively to secure its second shutout of the season.
- Iowa controlled a slight edge in possession (52–48) and took 17 total shots, but Loyola's back line, anchored by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Allison Deardorff, turned away every threat. Deardorff finished with five saves, including a pair of critical stops in the second half.
- The Ramblers countered with nine shots of their own, led by junior forward Zoe Hevey, who put two attempts on frame, and senior forward Molly Pistorius, who created chances throughout both halves. The Ramblers pressed late, forcing Iowa keeper Fernanda Mayrink into a key save in the 89th minute, but couldn't find the finishing touch.
- Ultimately, neither side could break through in a tightly contested 90 minutes. The result marks Loyola's first draw of the season and puts them 0-1-1 at home.
