CHICAGO – Loyola University Chicago fell 2-0 to UMass in its first Atlantic 10 loss, and the first loss at Loyola Soccer Park this season, on Sunday, Oct. 20.
"We weren't our best today and we knew that UMass is good at creating that pressure and pressure is their playmaker. We struggled to sort of match that pressure and connect that first pass," said head coach
Angela Staveskie.
"But we always say, win, lose, draw, you learn from everything. This is a very good team. We knew that coming in, and we've got two really important conference games ahead."
The Ramblers are now 8-3-5 overall, 3-1-4 in league play and 7-1-1 at home.
How It Happened
The match kicked off to a tame start, seeing one shot from UMass' Karina Groff and three Loyola corner kicks before the first goal.
In the 29th minute, Grace Pinkus of UMass had a shot blocked before the Minutewomen's leading scorer Bella Recinos netted the rebound to open scoring. The first half finished with two shots from the Ramblers and a one-goal lead for the Minutewomen.
UMass had a missed penalty kick in the 80th minute six minutes before Caroline Dickson netted the Minutewomen's second goal, assisted by Juliana Ryan. In the Ramblers attacking third, Ryan cleared the ball out of the box to put it into play for Dickson. The Minutewoman beat two Ramblers and scored on a fast breakaway at the top of the box.
The Ramblers took just two more shots in the second half to total four overall – Loyola's lowest shot count this season.
"It's really just trusting the process. They dropped a lot; they got numbers back. If we could have connected a few more passes, and were a little bit more patient, we could have generated a few more chances and got those shots. I'm confident that we'll regroup, we'll watch it, and we'll see, and we'll get more shots in the next one."
Inside the Box Score
- UMass' first half goal disrupted Deardorff's 398-minute shutout record since Saint Louis' penalty kick goal on Sept. 26.
- Loyola had its best home record ever, 7-0-1, up until today's loss to UMass.
- The Ramblers now rank fifth in the A-10 standing behind the No. 4 Minutewomen.
