DAVIDSON, N.C. –
Maggie Schmidt's first career goal came in the final two minutes of the match Sunday afternoon helping the Ramblers pick up three points in the Atlantic 10 standings. With 1:53 to play, Schmidt found the back of the net and Loyola Chicago downed Davidson for the win.
With the win, Loyola improves to 6-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the A10.
"We showed a lot of grit and fight today," said head coach
Barry Bimbi. "It's hard to win on the road, but we kept believing and eventually got the game winner and three points. We'll get back to work before hosting Richmond on Thursday night and try to sharpen things up."
How It Happened
In the first half of Sunday's match, the Ramblers held a 5-2 advantage on shots, but it was the Wildcats who tallied the closest strike of the half.
Loyola fouled inside the box at the 16:59 mark allowing Riley Patton to take a penalty kick for the Wildcats. Patton's shot was straight on with
Naya Lipkens in goal who was able to save it and keep the clean sheet.
In the second half,
Zoe Hevey struck twice on target inside the 65
th and 71
st minutes, but both were stopped by the Davidson keeper.
With the pressure on in the final minutes, Hevey managed to take the ball low left and cross into the box. Davidson's keeper deflected off her hands to a wide-open Schmidt on the right side who used one touch. Her high ball found the back of the net, and the Ramblers win, 1-0.
