Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ramblers Sprint Past UNI On Alumni Night, 3-0

Loyola improves to 2-0 in MVC play in comprehensive victory

In Short…
Three different Ramblers found the back of the net as the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team continued its perfect start to Missouri Valley Conference play this evening, cruising to a 3-0 victory over visiting Northern Iowa (3-7-1, 0-2-0 MVC) on Alumni Night at Loyola Soccer Park.  Tonight's win sees the Ramblers move to 6-2-1 (2-0-0 MVC).

Head Coach Barry Bimbi's Thoughts…
"I thought from the opening whistle that we played on the front foot.  We came out a little bit slow last week against Indiana State, so that was our focus coming into tonight.  We were rewarded with a couple of goals, which took a bit of the emotion out of the game and allowed us to get into a rhythm.  I thought it was a great team effort and it was great to see the backline step up and limit Northern Iowa's chances."

How It Happened
Loyola quickly pushed forward on a picturesque late afternoon for soccer in Rogers Park.  Junior Amanda Cassidy had a pair of tries blocked in the opening seven minutes before freshman Taylor Harrison was turned away by UNI goalkeeper Caitlin Richards in the 11th minute.

Junior Megan Nemec put the Ramblers on the board in 17th minute, intercepting a clearance attempt inside the 18-yard box and slotting home her right-footed effort from eight yards out at the far post, giving Loyola a 1-0 advantage.  Nemec made a bid for a brace in the 33rd minute, only to see her headed effort tipped out of play by Richards.

Loyola struck for a second with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.  Junior Olivia Knab lofted a cross from the left flank that carried over a leaping Richards and curled inside the far post to up the Maroon & Gold's lead to 2-0.  Graduate student Katharine Stephens nearly made it a three-goal edge in the 41st minute, but saw her attempt ring off the near post, as Loyola settled for a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.

It took the Ramblers all of 11 minutes to find a third coming out of the locker room. Following a spirted run down the left side by Nemec that saw her charge into the box, the junior slid a feed past an onrushing Richards, connecting with Harrison, who calmly slotted home from close range to put the finishing touches on a 3-0 triumph.

Looking At The Numbers
- Nemec netted her team-best fifth goal of the season to open the scoring, moving into a tie for The Valley lead in the category.  The Tinley Park, Ill. native was also credited with her third assist of the year on Harrison's second-half goal, which moves her to the top of the league's overall points leaderboard (13).
- Knab and Harrison each tallied their first goals of 2021, with Harrison opening her collegiate account in the second half.
- Junior Megan Demski notched her second assist of the campaign on Knab's 38th-minute goal.
- For the second time in as many outings, the Rambler defensive unit turned in a dominant showing, allowing UNI just three shots on the night, none of which came on goal, en route to Loyola's fifth shutout of the season.

Up Next
Loyola begins a stretch that sees it play four of its next five games away from home with a trip to Evansville on Wednesday, September 29.
