Women’s Soccer Battles Missouri State To Scoreless Draw In Season Opener

Ramblers outshoot Bears, 19-0, in dominant effort

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (February 28, 2021)

In Short
Two-time defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Loyola University Chicago (0-0-1, 0-0-1 MVC) dominated play, outshooting host Missouri State (1-3-2, 0-0-1 MVC), 19-0, but was unable to find the back of the net in a 0-0 draw in double overtime today at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium.

Coach Barry Bimbi's Thoughts
"It was great to get back out on the field and compete for the first time in 470 days and the team did not disappoint in their effort and passion. We have some things to sharpen up in front of the goal, but overall it was a great first game to kick off the spring season."

How It Happened
Loyola peppered Bears keeper Katherine Montgomery with a flurry of shots in the early stages of the match, with sophomore Megan Nemec and junior Abby Swanson putting shots on the goal in the first 14 minutes. The Ramblers had another chance to dent the scoreboard in the 39thminute, but Montgomery corralled another of Nemec's shots to keep the match deadlocked in a scoreless tie.

Nemec continued her assault on the Bears' back line in the second half, firing a pair of shots off the woodwork and another that Montgomery cradled, but despite holding a 10-0 advantage in shots for the period, the teams went into overtime still locked in a scoreless battle.

The Ramblers' had two golden opportunities to punch a goal through in the overtime sessions, the first coming off the foot of. Olivia Rhodes in the closing seconds of the first overtime, and the other in the 104thminute when Olivia Knab's shot was snared by Montgomery.

A Look At The Numbers
  • In addition to a 19-0 edge in shots, the Ramblers held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Nemec, the 2019 MVC Freshman of the Year, picked up where she left off, totaling six shots, four of which were on goal, and Freya Glen added four shots.
  • Knab registered a par of shots of goal among her three total shots on the day.
