In Short…
Propelled by goals from graduate student
Simone Wark and senior
Aleksa Tataryn, the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team defeated visiting South Dakota tonight, 2-1, in its 2019 home opener at Loyola Soccer Park. Tonight's victory pushes the Ramblers to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Coyotes slip to an identical mark.
Coach Barry Bimbi's Thoughts…
"It's great to get a result at home. The girls put in a great effort. I thought we made it hard for ourselves in the first half. South Dakota was very organized and compact. In the second half, the game opened up. We talked about putting balls behind them and winning second balls. It was nice to see our girls adapt. We created a ton of chances and I'm really happy about that."
How It Happened
Both teams struggled to generate chances in the opening 10 minutes of play on a mild late summer evening in Rogers Park. South Dakota's Amanda Carpio registered the first attempt of the night for either side in the 13
th minute, forcing a save out of sophomore goalkeeper
Maddie Hausmann.
Loyola made the most of its first chance less than a minute later as freshman
Megan Nemec connected with a streaking Wark, who evaded her defender before depositing her shot into the back of the net to give the Ramblers an early 1-0 advantage. Kellee Willer nearly put the hosts back on level terms in the 18
th minute, but pushed her try just wide of Hausmann's far post.
Tataryn and Nemec each came within inches of doubling the Rambler lead just in front of halftime, with Tataryn hitting the post before Nemec sent the ensuing rebound over the crossbar. That would prove to be the final opportunity of the half at either end as Loyola took a one-goal edge into the locker room.
The Ramblers came out as the aggressors in the second half, looking to add a vital insurance goal. Senior
Madison Laudeman sent her headed effort off a Tataryn corner narrowly wide in the 50
th minute, while Emma Harkleroad, the Coyotes' netminder, denied an onrushing Nemec two minutes later.
Loyola's persistence was rewarded in the dying seconds of the 69
th minute. Nemec was again turned away by Harkleroad, only for the resulting rebound to find the feet of Tataryn, who calmly finished from six yards out to make it 2-0. Jordan Centineo headed home off a corner in the 89
th minute to pull a goal back for South Dakota, but Loyola closed it out from there, holding on for a 2-1 victory before its home fans.
