In Short…
In a battle of two of the nation's hottest teams, Sabrina Bryan's goal in the 94
th minute was the difference as Hofstra (16-3-2, 7-0-2 CAA) pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team in overtime this afternoon in a First Round game of the 2019 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. Today's result from the Hofstra Soccer Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. sees the Ramblers close the regular season at 14-5-1 overall (7-0-0 MVC).
How It Happened
Hofstra saw the fair share of possession early on, quickly looking to strike in front of its home crowd. Loyola saw away a pair of Pride corner kicks inside the afternoon's first five minutes of play before freshman
Grace Droessler turned in a pair of saves just past the quarter-hour mark.
Loyola saw its best opportunity of the first half come in the 32
nd minute. Freshman
Megan Nemec split a pair of Pride defenders only to have her shot blocked, while senior
Aleksa Tataryn ripped a one-timer right into the waiting arms of Hofstra goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich as the two teams headed to halftime scoreless.
Droessler continued to keep Loyola on level terms early on in the second half, leaping to push Bryan's right-footed try off the crossbar in the 51
st minute. The Ramblers began to force the issue as the half wore on. Sophomore
Abby Swanson had the best of a flurry of chances for the Maroon & Gold, unleashing a blast from the top of the arc in the 65
th minute that Kuzmich was able to dive and tip off her near post. Swanson forced another stop out of the Pride netminder with just under 10 minutes to play, an attempt that proved to be the final shot on target of regulation for either team.
Hofstra found the day's golden goal just over three minutes into the first extra session. Bryan collected a feed from Bella Richards and let fly from left of the penalty spot with a rolling attempt that caromed off the far post and over the line, cementing Hofstra's place in the Second Round.
Looking At The Numbers
- Today's game marked Loyola's first overtime contest in five NCAA Tournament trips.
- Swanson closed the afternoon with a team-high five shots, three of which came on target.
- Hofstra finished the day with a 15-11 edge in shots.
- Droessler wrapped up a stellar freshman campaign with a five-save effort as Loyola limited a potent Hofstra attack that had been averaging nearly four goals over its last four games quiet until overtime.
- Today's defeat brings an end to the careers of Loyola's senior class of Tataryn,
Ari Banks,
Savanah Cruz,
Sienna Cruz,

Coach Barry Bimbi's Thoughts…
"I'm just gutted for the girls. They played their hearts out, and probably deserved better on the day. We have taken amazing strides as a program with this group of seniors. They have shown the younger players what it means to compete everyday and they are great ambassadors of Loyola."
