In Short…
Mikayla Unger scored just under three minutes into the first overtime as Illinois State picked up a 3-2 victory over the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team this evening at Loyola Soccer Park.  The victory pushes the Redbirds back to the .500 mark at 7-7-2 (2-2-0 MVC), while the Ramblers drop to 6-6-1 (3-1-0 MVC).

"It's obviously a disappointing result, but I thought it was a really good performance by our girls.  Illinois State is a well-coached team with quality players and they made us pay for some mistakes that we made."
 
How It Happened
Both goalkeepers were called into action early on in the first half.  Senior Jenna Szczesny unleashed a rocked that was turned away by Illinois State goalkeeper Haley Smith in the fourth minute of play, while junior goalkeeper Kate Moran deflected Shaina Dudas' shot away from her far post just over 90 seconds later. 
 
Senior Madison Kimball came dangerously close to putting the Maroon & Gold on top in the eighth minute, only to see her shot ring off the post.  Loyola began to find its footing as the half wore on, but was unable to cash in as the two in-state rivals headed to halftime knotted up at 0-0.
 
A second half that featured no shortage of offense started off on a positive note for the Ramblers in the 50th minute.  Kimball sent a low cross across the face of goal that was directed in by sophomore Jenna Ross to give Loyola a 1-0 edge.  That lead lasted all of 2:25, with Abby Basler putting the visitors back on level terms at 1-1 after she chipped a feed from Hannah Mueller past an onrushing Moran.
 
Illinois State took its first lead of the evening in the 73rd minute.  Following an initial stop by Moran on a header by Alissa Ramsden off of a Basler corner kick, Ziegler deposited the ensuing rebound into the back of the net to make it 2-1.  Loyola pushed forward with time ticking away.  Sophomore Katharine Stephens and senior Taylor Lambouris both forced impressive stops out of Smith before Szczesny cashed in off of a scramble inside the 18-yard box, pushing her attempt past the Redbird netminder in the 81st minute to even the score at 2-2 and ultimately force overtime.
The night's lone extra session featured just one shot from the right foot of Unger, who unleashed a blast from in upwards of 30 yards out that hit off the crossbar before bouncing over the line to seal a 3-2 victory for Illinois State.
 
Looking At The Numbers
- Szczesny's second-half goal improves her team-best total in the category to eight. That marks ranks her second in the Missouri Valley Conference.
- Ross' opening tally marked the first of her collegiate career.
- Basler's goal in the 53rd minute brought an end to an impressive streak that had seen Loyola hold opponents for 247 consecutive minutes of play.
- Moran closed the night with four saves, her most in a game since a five-stop effort back on September 23 against UNI.
 
Up Next
Loyola will look to get back on track on Wednesday evening when it opens up a two-game road stretch against Valparaiso.  Kickoff from Brown Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
