In Short…
Madison Costner scored five minutes into the first overtime to give Central Michigan a 2-1 win over the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team this evening at the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. With the win, Central Michigan improves to 3-2-1, while Loyola drops to 3-3-0.
Coach Bimbi's Thoughts…
"Today was a tough way to end the weekend, but hats off to a quality Central Michigan team. They earned that win. I think we have learned a lot about our group over the first three weekends, and feel that we're in a good place headed into our MVC opener on Friday night."
How It Happened
Loyola immediately looked to peg Central Michigan back in its own third early on as senior
Katie Grall, junior
Jenna Szczesny and sophomore
Sienna Cruz all forced saves out of Zoie Reed, the Chippewa netminder, in the opening 10 minutes of play. Central Michigan would answer back in the 11
th minute when Mary Carlson headed a corner kick delivery from Madison Pogarch into the back of the net to give the Chippewas a 1-0 lead.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Ford responded with a pair of saves following the goal to keep the Ramblers within striking distance as the first half wound down. With just less than four minutes to play, junior
Taylor Lambouris sent a corner kick into the box that took a fortuitous bounce and snuck past Reed to pull the Ramblers level, 1-1.
The second half featured multiple opportunities to find a winner on both ends. Ford came up with back-to-back stops during the half's middle stages before senior
Avalon Senn-Raemont had her attempt turned away by Reed at the other end of the field. Szczesny, who scored in the closing stages of a win at last season's edition of the Marquette Invitational, unleashed a blast in the 88
th minute that Reed turned away. Ford recorded one final save to wrap up regulation as the two teams headed to overtime.
Central Michigan would make the most of the first extra session's only scoring opportunity in the 96
th minute. Costner collected a rebound off of an initial stop by Ford and managed to put her second attempt past the Loyola goalkeeper to seal a 2-1 win for the Chippewas.
Looking At The Numbers
- Lambouris notched her first goal of the season and second tally of her collegiate career during the first half.
- Cruz fired a career-high six shots, including two on goal, to help pace the Loyola offensive attack.
- Despite being credited with the loss, Ford was fantastic today in goal as she recorded a season-high eight saves.
- Following the completion of the Marquette Invitational, Grall and freshman
Jenna Ross were named to the event's All-Tournament Team.
