In Short…
The Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team saw its winning streak brought to an end this evening as it dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Valparaiso at Loyola Soccer Park. With the win, the Crusaders move to 8-6-0 overall (2-1-0 MVC), while the Ramblers fall to 10-4-0 (3-1-0 MVC).
How It Happened
Both sides struggled to generate chances early on as the defenses ruled on a damp, overcast evening in Rogers Park. Senior
Emily Lange tallied the first attempt of the night for either team in the 19
th minute as she sent her shot well high of goal. Loyola's defense stepped up in the 29
th minute to clear Adi Johnson's attempt off the line to keep the game scoreless.
Following a stop by Valparaiso goalkeeper Drew Moulton on senior
Katie Grall, Valparaiso struck for an opening tally in the 37
th minute. Natalia Kontul sent an inswinging corner kick that deflected off of a pair of Loyola defenders and into the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Neither team would put an attempt on target for the remainder of the first half as Valparaiso took a one-goal advantage into the intermission.
With a steady rain beginning to fall, Valparaiso doubled its lead just inside five minutes into the second half. Sydney Griffin connected with Cory Griffith, who saw her trickling attempt skip past senior goalkeeper
Maddie Ford to double the Crusaders' lead, 2-0. Loyola began to press forward in the minutes following, with both junior
Jenna Szczesny and sophomore
Madison Laudeman heading wide of goal.
Szczesny pulled the Ramblers back to within one with a quarter of an hour remaining. The junior saw her initial attempt stopped by Moulton but finished off her follow up to trim the deficit to 2-1. Freshman
Kat Stephens came within inches of leveling the score in the ensuing minutes as she sent a shot just wide of the far post. Moulton would go on to make three saves within the final 10 minutes of regulation to help the Crusaders escape with a 2-1 victory.
Looking At The Numbers
- Szczesny scored her team-best 11
th goal of the season during the second half. That total has her tied for the MVC lead in the category alongside Drake's Rebecca Rodgers.
