In Short…
The Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team kept its hopes for a Missouri Valley Conference regular season title alive this evening as it defeated visiting Northern Iowa by a final count of 3-2 at Loyola Soccer Park. With the win, the Ramblers move to 12-5-0 overall (4-2-0 MVC), while the Panthers drop to 11-4-1 (3-3-0 MVC).
How It Happened
Following an emotional pregame ceremony in which Loyola honored its five graduating seniors, the Ramblers wasted no time in getting on the board. Just over seven minutes in, junior
Jenna Szczesny worked her way inside the 18-yard box before shaking off a defender and firing past Northern Iowa goalkeeper Jami Reichenberger to make it 1-0.
Three members of Loyola's senior class teamed up to double the advantage for the hosts in the 11
th minute.
Emily Lange sent a cross into the box that was headed on by
Avalon Senn-Raemont to
Katie Grall. Grall slotted her attempt in at the near post from 12 yards out to give Loyola a commanding 2-0 advantage. Northern Iowa answered back through Sydney Hayden just two minutes later as she tucked her looping shot under the bar and in at the far post to trim the margin to 2-1. That scoreline would hold until time expired in the first half as Loyola took a one-goal lead into the locker room.
Senior goalkeeper
Maddie Ford was forced into action only a minute into the second stanza when she stoned Brynell Yount's blast. Junior
Taylor Lambouris gave Loyola its second two-goal cushion of the night just over a minute later as her intended cross carried over a leaping Reichenberger and in at the far post to up the lead to 3-1. As was the case in the first half, the Panthers answered right back, with Jenny Wick finishing off of a corner kick to pull the visitors to within one, 3-2.
Senn-Raemont came close to giving Loyola a fourth goal on the night in the 71
st minute, only for Reichenberger to make an impressive stop. With time winding down, the Panthers pushed forward in search of a tying goal but were kept at bay by the Rambler defense. Ford added her final stop of the evening in the 88
th minute, collecting Hannah McDevitt's long-range attempt, to help Loyola capture a valuable three points in the conference standings.
Looking At The Numbers
- Following tonight's victory, Loyola finds itself just a point off of the pace being set by Drake at the top of the Missouri Valley Conference table.
- Szczesny notched her team-high 12
th goal of the season during the first half. That mark has her tied for the MVC lead in the category with Drake's Rebecca Rodgers.
- Grall's tally brings her goal total on the year to 11, putting her hot on the heels of both Szczesny and Rodgers for the league lead.
- Ford added six saves in goal to lead the Loyola defensive unit.
