MADISON, Wis. - Freshman Jenna Szczesny scored her third goal of the season tonight but a potent Wisconsin offense proved to be too much as the Badgers dealt the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team a 4-1 defeat tonight at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis. Wisconsin moves back above the .500 mark with the win, improving to 3-2-0 overall, while the Ramblers fall to 2-2-1.
Sarah Lawrence, one of three freshman to crack the Loyola starting eleven on the evening, looked to get the Ramblers offense rolling from the onset, forcing a save out of Wisconsin goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem in the first minute of play. Rose Lavelle tallied the hosts' first attempt just under two minutes later.
Lavelle found herself back in the mix in the 13th minute when she connected with McKenna Meuer at the top of the box. Meuer ripped a shot past Loyola goalkeeper Maddie Ford and into the back of the net to put Wisconsin on top, 1-0. Ford, making only the third start of her career, bounced back to make a pair of saves in the minutes following the goal.
Loyola was not deterred by the early deficit and continued to push for an opening tally. Junior Shelby Koch and senior Jessica Bean each forced a save out of Clem in the 28th and 30th minutes, respectively. Ford was called into action again in the 36th minute when she turned away a blast from Lavelle, only for Nikki Greenhalgh to put home the rebound, doubling the Badger advantage as the game headed to the intermission.
Wisconsin came out of the locker room firing and had once again doubled its lead, opening up a 4-0 advantage, by the 58th minute off of goals from Emily Borgmann and Lavelle. A foul in the box in the 59th minute gave Loyola a chance to get on the board. Szczesny, already Loyola's leader in goals and points entering the evening, calmly converted from the penalty spot to trim the margin to 4-1. Freshman Cassidy Lentz came on in relief of Ford in goal and kept the Badgers off the scoreboard for the final half hour but the Ramblers were unable to get any closer as they fell for the second time in as many games.
Loyola looks to end the weekend on a high note when it hosts Army West Point on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff against the Black Knights is set for 1 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Park.
