MADISON, Wis. - Loyola fell to No. 20 Wisconsin 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Madison, Wis., bringing the Ramblers to a 1-2-0 season record. After playing two Big Ten teams this weekend, Loyola looks to move forward in its game against Toledo on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Loyola opened the game immediately challenging Wisconsin for possession of the ball as junior Maggie Olsen sent a header wide in the third minute. Junior Alex Brownfollowed with a shot on goal five minutes later, but the Badgers' defense was there for the block.
The Ramblers were kept on their toes with the Badgers taking control of the game in the 20th minute as McKenna Meuer volleyed the ball into the goal, giving Wisconsin the lead 1-0. Monica Gonyohad little time to recover; making two back-to-back saves when play resumed.
In the 28th minute a corner kick by Wisconsin brought Gonyo out of goal to swat the ball away, but a quick turn-around by the Badgers' Lindsey Johnson left sophomore Moriah Schwarz to make the defensive stop. The Badgers continued their relentless pressure up top, netting another goal in the 31st minute. Down 2-0, the Ramblers held on until halftime, powered by senior Jessie Hublyin midfield.
In the second half, Wisconsin hammered down on offense, taking the advantage on shots 8-3. Loyola worked hard to counterattack the Badgers, but to no avail. By the 67th minute, Wisconsin had extended its lead 4-0.
A corner kick by senior Kristin Papierski in the 71st minute set Loyola up for one last scoring opportunity. Freshman Kristin Rodriguezreceived the ball, placing a header to the goal with the Badgers' goalkeeper making the save. The Ramblers finished the game with seven shots and two corner kicks. Gonyo was credited with six saves.
"I thought we had a fantastic first twenty minutes of the game," said head coach Barry Bimbi. "There were many instances of play that changed the complexion of the game and we have to do a better job of capitalizing those opportunities. We are playing well, but we haven't made a play to change the complexion of the game for the good yet."
