Box Score

VALPARAISO- With one kick from 25 yards out, Maggie Doe netted her second goal of the season and moved the Ramblers to 4-8 (2-0) this fall, as the Loyola University Chicago women's soccer team held onto beat Valparaiso 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Eastgate Field in Valparaiso, Indiana.

With the win, the Ramblers have won the last nine meetings against Valparaiso, dating back to the 2001 season. Loyola moves to 2-0 in the Horizon League, earning its second win in as many matches.

Doe, a senior, put the Ramblers in front midway in the second half after firing shot from seven yards outside the top of the penalty box. The kick found the left side of the net, fading just over the arms of Valpo goalkeeper Kristen Manski.

Doe's goal was all Loyola needed to stay perfect this season against conference opponents.

Taking the victory wasn't easy for the visitors, as Loyola spent most of the contest defending its own territory. For the majority of the contest, the Crusaders won the time of possession battle, totaling 11 corner kicks, seven coming in the first half. Loyola forced just one corner kick all game.

However, the Rambler backline, led by freshmen Elyssa Kulas and Claire Wiese, didn't let any action get behind them, assisting Loyola goalkeeper Katie Groesch in the shutout win.

The junior keeper helped her own cause late in the contest, coming up big when Valpo's Rachael Hoaglin fired a clear shot from five yards inside the box. However, Groesch made the game-saving block after the diving to her right, preventing the Valpo score. On the evening, Groesch made three saves.

On offense, Doe led the Ramblers with a goal on two shots. Kristin Papierski also fired two shots. As a team, Loyola managed nine shots to Valpo's 18.

The Ramblers will now travel to the Motor City to face Horizon League member Detroit on Sunday, October 3. Match time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST.
