CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Loyola women's soccer team fell to Illinois, 2-0, on Friday night (Sept. 18) in Champaign, Ill. The Ramblers (1-8-0) were out shot by the Fighting Illini (4-3-1) by a 19-8 margin in the loss.
Illinois tallied its first goal in the 28th minute on a Marissa Mykines free kick. Mykines sent the shot to the top-right corner of the net from 18 yards out to give the Fighting Illini the early lead.
Illinois struck again late in the second half when Jordan Hilbrands capitalized on a well-placed pass from Chichi Nweke inside the box for the second goal of the match.
Freshman Jessie Hubly led the Ramblers in shots, recording three on the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Groesch made seven saves for LU.
"I thought we competed well and created some good chances," said Loyola head coach Frank Mateus. "Give Illinois a lot of credit. They are a very good team and that was one of the best defenses that we've seen all year."
Loyola makes the last leg of its month-long road swing next week when the Ramblers travel to take on Green Bay on Tuesday (Sept. 22) and Milwaukee on Friday (Sept. 25).
