East Lansing, Mich. - Host Michigan State scored on both sides of halftime en route to a 2-0 victory over Loyola this afternoon in East Lansing, Mich. The Ramblers, who scored six goals in Friday night's win at Xavier, were blanked for the third time this season and drop to 2-4. Michigan State maintains its perfect start to the year, moving to 5-0 with the win.
The Spartans opened the scoring on a set piece, when Cara Freeman headed home a corner kick in the 33rd minute. It was the only tally of a half in which the Ramblers mustered just two shots, to six for MSU.
Loyola improved its pace in the second half and Alexia Murray had two shots in a three-minute span as the Ramblers searched for a tying goal. However, it was Michigan State that would get the crucial second goal, with Laura Heyboer netting her sixth goal of the year, again resulting from a corner, in the 64th minute and the Rambler offense was stymied the rest of the way.
Loyola returns to action on Friday night (Sept. 12) when it takes on Northwestern in its home opener at Loyola Soccer Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
