CHICAGO - Sophomore Laura Trevillian scored two goals and assisted on a third as Loyola got back in the win column with a 3-0 shutout of Drake tonight at Loyola Soccer Park. The Ramblers, who snapped a modest two-match losing streak, earned their first home win of the year and improved to 4-7 heading into Sunday afternoon's Horizon League opener. Drake slumps to 1-6-1 with the loss.
Loyola opened the match strong, enjoying a majority of the possession and keeping the ball in the Drake half of the field. The pressure was rewarded in the 22nd minute, as Alexia Murray, joining the attack from her outside back spot, lofted a cross from the right for Trevillian to head in for her third goal of the season. Just 30 seconds later, Loyola had the ball in the net again, but Nikki Staton was ruled offsides and the Ramblers settled for a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.
The Ramblers doubled their lead in the early moments of the second half, with Cynthia Morote-Ariza playing a long free kick from just inside the midfield stripe. Trevillian headed the ball on to a charging Staton who snuck past the Bulldogs defense and scored near-post. The 49th minute tally was Staton's first of the season and second of her career. Loyola almost put the match out of reach in the 77th minute but Selina Hunt was denied by a fine save from DU keeper Jenny Schroeder. However, less than six minutes later, Trevillian successfully put the match out of reach, starting and finishing some neat play. She opened the play with a nice ball to play in Morote-Ariza down the right side. Morote-Ariza beat her defender to the byline and sent in a low cross that Trevillian was able to direct into the net for her first multi-goal game as a collegian. In addition, Morote-Ariza broke yet another school record on the play, notching her 10th assist of the season to break the old mark of nine that she had set in each of her first two seasons in Rogers Park.
Loyola's defense turned in a solid performance to record its first clean sheet of the season.
The Ramblers return to action on Sunday afternoon, opening Horizon League play with a 2:30 p.m. match against Wright State at Loyola Soccer Park.
